Default F2.8 300mm canon second hand lens wanted

Greetings,I'm new on this forum. I am full time bird photographer on pension using a canon 7Dmk2 camera with sigma 500 mm. Looking for Canon f2.8 300mm lens, obviously the f2.8 400mm would be ideal but too expensive.
    Any ideas for reasonable price.
Would it be better to try get f4 500 mm canon lens.

500 or 600 would be better for birds. I had a 300 F2.8 and used a TC x2 most, if not all, of the time for birds.
I would lean towards a 500 f4 with TC 1.4 for ease of handling.

300 is a little short for serious birding, but handy in really low light with the f2.8 Canon 500 f4 is good choice, and used comes on the market for 50k+. WHich Sigma 500 do you have, and why swop that for a Canon 500?

The sigma lens I'm using is sigma DG 150-500mm 1:5-6.3 APO HSM. Ito just not sharp enough,I'm thinking of trying micro adjustment that canon 7dmk2 has on board, some say it can make a difference.

Oh yes and the thought was to use the 2.8 300mm with 2x converter.
Which would be cheaper the 2.8 300 or f4 500

The AF Micro adjustments will help only if your lens shows front or back focus offset. It remains a middle order zoom though, and if you are critical of your photo's, you might have outlived its potential.
The 300/2.8 will be cheaper (used or new) than 500/4. Used with a 2x TC you should get quite decent results. I use my 120-300/2.8 OS with a 2x, and results are as good as my 300-800 clean, or 500 f4 with 1.4x TC. Canon 1D4, 120-300 f2.8 with 2x TC, 600mm, f5.6, 1/100, ISO 800, fill flash, uncropped, close so limited DoF. Name: SDP_0503.jpg
