Default advice needed from the people in the know

    I have an entry level Nikon d3100 with a 55-300mm 1:45 - 5.6 ed and a 18-55 1:3.5 - 5.6g lenses.

I am at this point in time thinking I need a bit better camera setup and lenses as my skill level goes up.....

conundrum is I cannot afford the more semi pro cameras......not even second hand.....

any ideas what would be a better option.....I love shooting candid portraits of kids/people with my long lens and a bit of wildlife. I hardly use the small lens.

Bushpilot - yes it is a conundrum. Believe me - we ALL go thru that. often.

The 3100 is an entry level - so you would be good to look at something 7*** at the very least. Of course of of the things with entry level is the poor ISO performance.
It boils down to what you can afford. What are you willing to spend? What have you looked at ?

I mostly buy second hand bodies - for various reasons but also because of the financial implication.

If you buy a GOOD lens - it would and could carry you for many many years. Unlike a body

difficult situation. I would suggest setting yourself a goal, and save for that. Body - move up a level like the 5000 series, buy used. Lenses - go good quality - they last longer on lifetime than bodies. Again - save and buy when ready. Good luck

I have been looking to go to a Nikon d5300 or d5400 but second hand ones are still a tad out of what I can afford at the moment when they do become available( not very often).

To my mind there is not enough difference between the D3xxx and the D5xxx range to make it worthwhile. If that is your limit, rather spend all the available cash on better lenses, I believe you will get a better return there.

Then start saving seriously for a D7xxx.
