I am sure there are a couple of people with more opinions than me. Probably better ones too

Fungus on a lens is a problem - it grows and chows into your lens coating for one. Not all lenses are viable to have cleaned (by the professionals) as sometimes it's cheaper to throw it and buy again.

I don't know if you guys get fungus inland? ore of a coastal issue?

I have only seen it once. It looked like a dark, fuzzy stain on a large portion of one element.

The results were very visible in photos. Like you were photographing in heavy mist.

google images fungus on lens - then you will get an idea of the spidery effect it can cause. Remember it's not a big web that appears on day one - starts out small spots and grows. SO look carefully. But the repair places can also check for you

Thank you for the input peep's.

Is the issue an environment one?
    A care and storage one?
    Specific to certain lens?

Pointers on how to avoid and questions to ask when purchasing lenses, new and secondhand.

Thank you for the link Elsa. Now I am concerned. I have a Canon 7D mk2 and read this from a very good friend from the aquarium fraternity.

Should Canon 7D users be worried?

Whether or not something gets wet doesn't necessarily mean fungus will grow there. It's far more likely to suffer electronic failure due to the actual water.

Up here in the highveld, something that gets wet normally dries out again too soon for fungus to take hold. If they all have such large gaps, I would expect drying out to happen fairly quickly.

Anyway, I have never actually heard of fungus growing in a camera. I think the mirror box is far to well ventilated, unless you store it in an area where fungus grows on the walls...

Fungus grows where the devil fears to walk.
But the circumstances must lean towards that - dark humid warm places. The coast. Mostly.
