    Default Is Nikon D500 poor man's D5

Although I would love to own the new D5 I find it difficult to justify the price. I currently am using a D4 and D810 with pro short zooms and prime long lens. I realise the D500 is DX format but my FX lenses will work. Further the D500 offers "most" of the other D5 features. I need a high fps camera with quick focus to use with my D810 (which I love). I can try to sell my D4 (good condition) and rob the bank to add +- R90k or keep D4 and just get the D500 (will leave some cash for a trip or two). Now what about the D750??? Yip max 1/4000 ss....

Please do not ask what my budget is as I am on my knees in front of the Minister of Finance aka as missus.

Comments will be appreciated, thanks all

I cant comment on the D500 - but I can comment that I dont believe the D5 is justified.
Even if one has money - doesnt mean you have to spend it on the latest and greatest.
Peter Connan has the D750 - he might tell you more.
Spend your (extra) money on a trip and go use the cameras you have

Elsa, I do appreciate you alway willing to share your wealth of knowledge. On most of my previous posts you also were some of the first to comment, well done girl!!!

I have in the mean time also talked to Neal Cooper (CNP Safaris) and decided to not part with my hard earned cash (especially as I am now a pensioner also subjected to the Zumafactor)

Tsk Tsk Tsk - you say I am nice but you listen to Neal ..... What is the world coming to! Now next time just listen to me - I am much prettier than Neal anyway.

If you think about it - you really wont be sorry.

    Happy shooting

Well, i can't see that the D750 can be a significant step up from the D4 in any respect other than AF performance in very bad light. Light so bad that you probably won't get too many keepers anyway unless something extraordinary is happening.

Make no mistake i love my D750 but it is slower than the D4, and has a smaller buffer. More resolution, but then not as much as you already have.

The joker is the AF system in the D500. Nobody knows yet, but i expect it to be a game-changer for those who photograph small birds in flight, but for larger subjects the performance may not be all that much better. Only time will tell.

    ISO50, 1/4000'sec, why is that a problem?

D750 is a cracking camera, with a great sensor.

My attitude always, is that bodies are wastefull, lenses are investments.

    Good luck

As stated in the thread we just returned from a wonderful time on the Chobe (with CNP Safaris) shooting the Skimmers. A few people on the boat had the D500, new 300mm f4 plus 1.4x converter. They all managed to shoot out of hand while the skimmers were jolling in the air. I must say I struggled with my heavier combination to keep up. There shots were excellent and focus quick and excellent tracking......

Will have to ask my wife to make a new batch of the itch cream.

mmmm 40k + 40K + 9.5K = yup - cream would be good. Might need some KY too cause if you buy that lot - someone might be screwed.
I shoot with the D800 & Nikon 200-500 - a real bus and trailer in comparison to the D500 +300 lens combination. Yet I get what I am after - I just have to make it work.

Hope you had a wonderful time in Chobe!

From all reports, the D500's AF system is pretty amazing at tracking small, fast-moving items.

On the other hand, noise performance at higher ISO's is still not on par with full-frame.

So while I would really like one, I wouldn't want to swop my D750 for it.

    Bring on the itch cream!

Keep you shutterspeeds high with the 200-500. I never shoot birds under 2500 if I can help it. Ye perhaps I am not as steady as the rest of you - but especially if renting - you dont know the lens, rather safe than sorry. Good luck and enjoy.

    Cleva people, help here please...

So I am taking D500 and 200-500, D610 with 80-200 and a wide angle. What body/ lens combo would you recommend I carry on the Land Rover during game drives?

    Regards
