I will not pay R50k for a 70-200 VRII lens, paid R14000 for the Tamron. Is the Nikon R36 000 better? I dont know......

I have really put my mind to this - and the only thing I can come up with - is playing solitaire with real cards

At least a pack of cards is still less than the price of an avocado or a head of cauliflower.

    Yes!

Of course I feel sorry for pros who insure their gear against replacement value. Suppose you bought a D3s and skipped the D4 range. You now have to insure your D3s at replacement value, ie D5 prices. Madness! Nobody wins...

Elsa, do not know if the insuring part will work for most. I had to give up on that as it became to expensive trying o keep up with "replacement value". I have now just upped my "house content" and when I do go out, put on what I take along. These increases are hurting even the ones not in the market for new gear

This is exactly it - I have my own savings for gear (my own insurance fund) but with the price increase - this is no longer sufficient. Therefor the increase impacts on me directly even though I don't need to buy Nikon gear. One needs to insure those items you know will kill you off if you loose it - you don't insure the whole lot.

I don't understand the logic behind these prices still yes there is some 3rd party importing and what not but I find it still to be leker skelm. Canon announced their 1dx m ii and it retails for $5999 and the Nikon d5 for $6500 how does that $500 justice the extra 30 000 they asking that and just before canon announced their camera it was 50 000 more. Looks to me like Nikon is imported by the Anc or something

Age and other insured items, car home and specified items on the same policy make a huge difference to the premium you pay.

not necessarily - HOW is his stuff insured

    My insurance is for :
    business purposes
    all risk
    accidental loss
    Accidental damage
    Theft

That makes the premium higher. Most insurers do not cover you as above.

BTW - I had 2 insurance quotes - both via brokers and the same insurance company

two quotes - one for R3600 per month - the other for R1600 per month. Now THAT makes you think.

When Canon launched the 200-400 F4 lens it was much more expensive than the Nikon version .. At one stage I remarked I can buy a D4 plus 200-400VR1 for less.... That is how the wheel turns.

The problem is easily summerised. The collective of photographers believe that once a model is superseded, the current model automatically receives a total downgrade in specification from the universe. Some even stop working.....

Insurance, that is another ballgame too... premium vastly different between amateurs and professional togs

Buy a Harley, it keeps its second hand value far better than any camera or lens.
